Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease that causes the cornea to take an irregular shape. Normally, the cornea is shaped like a dome, but if you have keratoconus, your cornea will become thin and bulge outwards, becoming irregular and cone shaped. Since, the cornea is responsible for refracting most of the light that comes into the eye; the irregular shape can cause significantly distorted vision.

Symptoms include blurred and distorted vision, frequent rubbing of eyes due to itching, headache, eyestrain, frequent change in eye glass power, fluctuating vision, etc.

Types of contact lenses prescribed: Scleral lenses, Mini scleral lenses, ROSE-K Lenses, RGP Lenses.

Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD)

PMD is a degenerative disease that causes vision to deteriorate as the cornea slowly changes its shape. PMD is very similar to keratoconus, where it causes thinning of the cornea with gradual loss of vision. Symptoms include blurred and distorted vision, headache, eyestrain, frequent change in eye glass power, fluctuating vision, etc.

Post Corneal Transplant (PK/PKP)

A corneal transplant (Penetrating Keratoplasty) involves the removal of damaged or diseased corneal tissue and replacing it with a healthy corneal graft/tissue. Transplant tissues are acquired from an organ donor via a local eye bank, similar to other organ transplants. Post transplant vision changes take place resulting in low to high refractive errors like myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. In some cases the donor or transplanted cornea can give rise to ectasia (corneal irregularity).

Post Lasik Ectasia

Lasik surgery is performed to correct refractive errors. This laser vision correction procedure has high success rates, but sometimes the results of the surgery depends on how one’s cornea responds to the surgery and how one’s cornea heals after the surgery. In rare cases eyes that have undergone lasik will develop post surgical ectasia, a condition that resembles to keratoconus. This results in irregular astigmatism which in turn gives rise to blurred and distorted vision. Symptoms of post lasik ectasia include glare, haloes, starburst around headlights, eyestrain, headache as well as dry eyes. These symptoms usually develop few months after the surgery.

Sjogren’s Syndrome (SD)

SD is a chronic, progressive, multi-system auto-immune disease. Similar to other auto-immune diseases your body’s white blood cells attack and damage your own body. In this case, the disease targets the moisture secreting glands of the eyes and mouth, resulting in decreased production of tears and saliva.

Dry eyes that is caused due to Sjogren’s results in severe discomfort and gradual loss of vision.

Ocular Chronic GVHD

Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a complication of bone marrow, stem cell or cord blood transplantation that can affect the eyes as well as other organs including the lungs, liver, skin and gut. Patients with GVHD have signs and symptoms of severe dry eyes which can lead to corneal involvement causing severe discomfort and loss of vision.

Types of contact lenses prescribed: Scleral lenses, Mini scleral lenses

Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD)

LSCD is a potentially blinding disease in which there is a breakdown at the limbus (the junction between the cornea and conjunctiva). The transparent cornea is replaced by a hazy conjunctival tissue. This leads to corneal defects such as formation of ulcers and scars leading to pain and loss of vision.

Post Radial Keratotomy (RK)

RK is a vision correction surgery performed to correct myopia (near-sightedness). Small but deep incisions are made in the cornea to flatten it. That was an old method of refractive surgery that was carried out in the early 1970’s. Post RK, complications include weakened cornea, ocular infections and inflammations, irregular astigmatism and sensitivity to light. Patients mainly complain of dry eyes, double vision, fluctuating vision, haloes, glare, starburst patterns, etc.

Types of contact lenses prescribed: Scleral lenses. Mini scleral lenses

Steven’s Johnson Syndrome (SJS)

SJS is a disorder that causes painful blisters and lesions on the skin and mucous membranes and can also cause severe eye problems. The most common cause of SJS is an adverse allergic drug reaction. Any drug can result in SJS, but sulfa drugs are the most common cause. SJS is more common in children and younger adults, but can develop at any age. Eye problems associated with SJS can include conjunctivitis, scarring of the conjunctiva, and inflammation inside the eye, corneal blisters and perforation which can lead to permanent vision loss.
