Ortho-K Lenses (For Adults)
Ortho-K Lenses (For Adults)
Ortho-k lenses are gas permeable contact lenses that are used in the process of orthokeratology. Ortho- k lenses are also known as corneal re-shaping contact lenses.
Orthokeratology is a natural, non-surgical procedure of correcting vision overnight (during sleep) with the help of ortho-k lenses. So, while you sleep these lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye (cornea) and when you wake up the next morning and remove these lenses you are able to see everything clearly without the need of wearing spectacles, contact lenses or any form of vision correction.
Ortho-k lenses are prescribed for two purposes:
- To correct refractive errors of mild to moderate degree (primarily myopia, hyperopia & astigmatism). In some cases ortho-k lenses are also used to correct presbyopia.
- To correct refractive errors of mild to moderate degree (primarily myopia, hyperopia & astigmatism). In some cases ortho-k lenses are also used to correct presbyopia.
How do these lenses work?
Ortho-k lenses are specially designed lenses that are worn overnight (during sleep). These lenses gently re-shape the cornea while you sleep. The central portion of the lens is made flat which creates a positive pressure on the central part of the cornea and redistributes the cells towards periphery thus achieving the desired amount of refractive correction needed. After removing these lenses the next morning, you are able to see clearly without the need of wearing any form of vision correction. It takes around two days of overnight ortho-k lens wear to achieve 20/20 vision. Higher prescriptions can take two weeks or longer.
Who is a good candidate for ortho-k lenses?
- Patients having mild to moderate myopia (with or without mild astigmatism) are good candidates for ortho-k. Ortho-k lenses can also correct lesser degrees of astigmatism, hyperopia and presbyopia..
- Children and young adults who want to be glasses-free but are not ideal candidates for lasik or any kind of refractive surgery.
- People who participate in dynamic activities and contact sports or work in dusty environments which can pose problem to contact lens wear or spectacles are good candidates for ortho-k lenses.
