Mini Scleral Lenses
Mini Scleral Lenses
Mini scleral lenses are small diameter scleral lenses (smaller in size as compared to full scleral lenses) that vault entirely over the black portion of the eye (cornea) and rests smoothly over the white part of the eye (sclera). These lenses function similarly as compared to full scleral lenses.
In certain eye conditions where it becomes difficult to fit or insert full scleral lenses, mini scleral lenses are advised.
Also the design and geometry of mini scleral lenses is different as compared to full scleral lenses.
A mini scleral lens creates a smooth optical surface and corrects vision in different types of corneal irregularities. These lenses are filled with saline and then inserted into the eye. The saline moistens the cornea and sclera, providing maximum comfort during lens wear. Mini scleral contact lenses also provide the highest quality of vision as compared to other lens types. These lenses are designed in such a way that they completely eliminate aberrations such as glare, haloes, shadows, double vision and blurred vision. Such kind of aberrations are seen in complex corneal diseases and eye conditions such as keratoconus, keratoglobus, post-Lasik complications, pellucid marginal degeneration, severe dry eye, etc. Mini scleral contact lenses prove to be most effective in complex corneal diseases where conventional treatment options like surgery, regular contact lenses and spectacles fail to improve vision. Hence corneal diseases and eye conditions of mild to moderate cases can be fit and treated with mini scleral contact lenses.
Eye conditions treated with mini scleral contact lenses:
- Keratoconus (mild to moderate severity)
- Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD)
- Terriens Marginal Degeneration (TMD)
- Corneal Transplant (PK/PKP)
- Radial Keratotomy (RK)
- Post-Lasik Ectasia (PRK, PTK, Lasik)
